A group of former Members of Parliament recently tried the same line, to argue that the courts had no jurisdiction to try them under the theft act.
This argument was rejected, at least in that case, and two have already pleaded guilty, three await trial.
The one of the two guilty pleas that's already gone to sentencing got an 18 month prison sentence, which the judge said was the lower end of the scale of possible sentences for the crime. Which rather suggests that the ones who are contesting the charges had better brace themselves and pack more than one spare toothbrush.
